Quilting Services

Long Arm machine quilting is perhaps the most efficient and technologically advanced method of quilting today. It fundamentally differs from machine quilting on a domestic sewing machine; in that with this system the machine head is moved, while the quilt is held stable. The quilt sandwich (top, wadding and backing fabric) are set up on a roller system, which makes basting unnecessary and a Pantograph or edge to edge quilting covers the entire quilt with a repeating pattern.

With literally thousands of hours working with the long-arm quilting machines, Maureen is experienced in offering a fantastic quality of work in edge to edge quilting.

QUILT PREPARATION TIPS

  1. Ensure that your backing fabric is at least 4" larger on all sides of your quilt top. (eg. For a finished quilt measuring 60" X 60" - your backing fabric would be at least 68" square). The top and bottom edges of the backing fabric are pinned onto rollers, then attached to clamps on both the left and right sides of the quilt. This ensures your quilt is stable whilst being quilted.
  2. Make sure that your backing fabric is square and sits flat with no puckering if you have joined your backing. If you have joined your backing, you should always remove the selvages along the seam line. I will ask you at the time of consultation which way you would like your backing fabric to run. Do you want your seam to run down the middle of your quilt or would you like it to go from side to side? Please keep this in mind for fabric prints with a clear direction to their pattern.
  3. When choosing a backing fabric, please take into consideration what colour thread you would like to use on the top of your quilt. Using the same or a very similar colour thread top and bottom works the best.
  4. Please ensure that your wadding is large enough (easiest when cut the same size as the backing). If your wadding has joins; make sure it doesn't have a seam which will be felt through the quilting - just butt the edges together and either hand or machine piece together. Another option is to fuse the two pieces together using an iron on interfacing.
  5. Ironing your backing and quilt prior to leaving it with us is very helpful and greatly appreciated.
  6. Have a think about what quilting designs you’d like on your quilt. Is it a gift? What’s your preferred style and colour palette? Do you like the look of blending threads or contrasting threads?
  7. Remember, if you say "Quilt what you think is best" then you will get what the quilter interprets your quilt top needs. The more information you provide, the better the result. Not everyone likes cowboy boots in bright orange thread on their hand pieced Dresden plate quilt do they ;)
